Study on the Use of Listening Strategies of Non-English Majors in Ordinary Universities

This paper reports a study that investigates the listening strategies of 200 non-English majors by using qualitative and quantitative methods. With a questionnaire and interviews, it explores the types of the English listening strategy use and the ways to improve English proficiency. The major findings are as follows: 1) Four types of English listening strategy are frequently used by non-English majors; 2) The research subjects frequency of total strategies use is at a low level; 3) The students inappropriate psychological state is responsible for the low listening competence. Based on the results of comparison, we bring forward some suggestions on the improvement for listening teaching.
