Experimental Study on the Effect of Exercise Training on Smoking-induced Airway Hyperresponsiveness in Rat

To study the effects of exercise training on the rat smoking-induced pulmonary injury and possible mechanisms. Methods Rats were exposed to either air or cigarette for consecutive 60 days. In the last 30 days, rats in smoking exercise group were subjected to running exercise training. Airway responsiveness, serum cortisol contents and lung morphological changes were investigated. Results Rats exposed to cigarette for 60 days had obviously higher airway responsiveness than control group, meanwhile, lung tissue showed chronic inflammatory response. Rats in smoking exercise group had obviously lower airway responsiveness and higher serum cortisol content than in smoking group. Chronic inflammatory reaction in lung tissue was also milder in smoking exercise group than in smoking group. Conclusion Exercise training could alleviate the smoking-induced airway hyperresponsiveness through stimulating the generation of endogenous cortisol.
