Experiment Design of Applying Scientific Visualization into Data Visualization

A Picture Is Worth a Thousand Folders. Gwendolyn,a scientist in cognition,proposed: over 80% of communications between human depend on non-character language,and meanings of most characters are based on non-character language or even implications of pictures. Mehrabian (1971) also said: for any information,93% of the meaning is included in noncharacter language and only 7% is contained in characters. 95% of peoples thoughts and feelings are hidden in consciousness and rarely expressed. Nowadays,computers are extensively used for technology researches;scientific visualization,which presents data visualization through simple picture,thus is a necessary tool for researches. With the coming of data visualization in 21st century,global enterprises have to analyze a great deal of information. Therefore,graphic process unit manufacturers around the world invest a lot in the application of scientific visualization to enhance decision-making quality and speed. Through experiment design,this study investigates differences in recognition time and degree of using character,table and graphics to show the same data. SPSS 17.0 is adopted for statistical analysis. According to different factorial attributes,independent samples t test,paired-samples t test and one way ANOVA are used. Experiment results verify that the recognition of graphics is significantly higher than table;table shows an obviously better recognition than character when the data contents increase. On the whole,recognition of graphics is significantly higher than table and character under any condition. The present study demonstrates graphics is better than table and table is better than character. Consequently,the research results can provide a reference for relevant researchers and designers to present data contents. Data visualization is a trend both at the present and in the future.
