Understanding Preventive Conservation of Architectural Heritage in Historical Context
Preventive Conservation, was first proposed in the first “International Conference for the Study of Scientific Methods for the Examination and Preservation of Works of Art held in Rome, 13-17, October, 1930. It was someway proposed as a new scientific method for historic preservation. At first, it was mostly restricted to academic discussion, and its real practice was very limited. From 1980s to 1990s, preventive conservation was widely practiced in the field of museum, focusing on the controlling of the environments of works of art. In late 1990s, preventive conservation was gradually accepted as a systematic change in heritage conservation, and at the beginning of 21st century, it was first discussed in the field of architectural heritage conservation. In general, the short history of preventive conservation could be briefly divided into 3 main phases: first phase of concept discussion from 1930s to 1970s, second phase of wide practices in controlling the environment in the field of museum from 1980s to 1990s, and the third systematic phase from late 1990s onto today. And preventive conservation of architectural heritage was the important part of the third systematic phase. According to the history of architectural conservation, we could understand that, preventive conservation was founded as a new concept in the anti-stylistic-restoration movement, and later gradually accepted as the scientific method for continuing the historical authenticity of the buildings. Preventive conservation of architectural heritage, involves all the measures to delay the loss of historical authenticity and ultimately the integrity, and encompasses heritage management and the involvements of all stakeholders. Compared with the value-based conservation, preventive conservation is based on both valuation and risk assessment of architectural heritage. It requires a change in attitudes and habits, and must be continuous and cautiously repetitive.
