OPEN SOURCE MEETS PRESERVATION:WEB BASED TOOLS FOR PREVENTIVE CONSERVATION OF ARCHITECTURAL HERITAGE
Preservation of the architectural heritage is progressively linked to the regular maintenance of monuments, defining the preventing conservation a real necessity in everyday practice. This paper discusses the need for a spatial information infrastructure in cultural heritage and web based tools as a support to preventive conservation, information sharing and knowledge dissemination of heritage. In particular,a‘box-system approach is argued, similar to the traditional representation of architecture that uses combination of plans, sections and fronts: technological elements are thus not represented as single units but they are interconnected, forming a complex organism such as an architectural monument. The open source software and tools were used to create an infrastructure able to host large amount of data from geometrical and historical survey while elaborated models served for a further analysis of materials and their degradation and for the simulation of the structural stability of the whole complex. Two case studies illustrate different problems faced: Royal Villa in Monza (Italy), a construction from XVIII cen. with the characteristics of the noble countryside villa with perfect symmetries and rigorous spatial logic; and St. Nicholas Byzantium church, Mesopotam (Albania), a rare example of byzantine religious architecture with many irregularities in form and structure, a consequence also of numerous earthquakes occurred in the area. The paper gives an insight into potentials of web geo-portals able to combine complex information in spatial reference systems useful for professionals during analysis, monitoring and conservation, for information dissemination to the large public but also valuable to the public administration for more informed decision making and management strategies. The link made here between technology and tradition has as the objective to overcome the existing gaps and to promote a more nimble comprehension of heritage as a source of our social identity and as an engine for the territorial development.
