Preventive conservation of UNESCO World Heritage Sites: Petra Archaeological Park (Jordan) and Baalbek (Lebanon at risk
this contribution provides a “concept for the development of risk management plans at UNESCO World Heritage Sites, which is an essential task in defining and implementing preventive conservation strategies within management plans. Two case studies are provided; the first case study is based on an ongoing project on the Petra Archaeological Park (Jordan) and the second in Baalbek (Lebanon).Regardless of the extend of archaeological investigations and management plans have been carried out at Petra and Baalbek, and the fact that they are both onthe UNESCO World Heritage list, they both lack a comprehensive values-centered study that aims at understanding how its features contribute to the statement of significance. This detailed values assessment is equally important understand the level of integrity requiredto preserve this important heritage place “Outstanding Universal Value (OUV).Furthermore, along with the values assessment, the identification of disturbances/threats for condition and risk assessment currently affecting (or potentially) the integrity of the property should be precisely determined, considering that these two sites not only posses rich decorated surfaces and standing structures, but also important landscape features. This paper will focuses in defining a framework for the “rapid risk assessment of these features that will allow establishing prioritizes of action according to the magnitude of the risk and impacts affecting the integrity. Equally important, this paper will underlinea framework for long term monitoring tool that would allow the site managers to determine qualitative indicators of risks.
