EVALUATION OF ENVIRONMENTAL RISKS IN THE CATHEDRAL OF SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA-SPAIN

The Santiago de Compostela Cathedral is one of the main destinations of pilgrimage since the Middle Ages. It was declared Heritage of Cultural Interest in 1896 and the old city of Santiago the Compostela, in which the Cathedral is situated, UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1885. During last years, heritage conservators have faced a new challenge: the necessity to control the variations of the environmental conditions, due to new climatic conditions, pollution and the increasing affluence of visitors. As documented in the photographic archive, the polychromies and paintings of the Portico of the Glory and Major Chapel, have suffered and are now suffering important accelerated deterioration. Some recent studies carried out in these areas have proved that the complex and variable environmental dynamics strongly affect their state of conservation. For this reason, a complete study on their actual conditions has been performed under the framework of the “Santiago de Compostela Cathedral Program (Cathedral Program) by the Archbishop of Santiago, the Cathedral Chapter and the Barrie Foundation, in collaboration with the Regional Ministry of Culture of the Xunta de Galicia and under the Technical Direction of the Spanish Institute of Cultural Heritage of the Ministry of Culture. The main aim of this program is to develop projects for the preventive conservation and restoration of the Portico of the Glory and the mural paintings of the Major Chapel. It must be mentioned here that the Cathedral Program has been funded by the Barrie Foundation with 3.000.000€. The monitoring analysis has demonstrated that there is a correlation between the damages and the adverse microclimate conditions. In order to reduce the circumstances which favour the development of pathologies, several strategies of management of the environment and control of risks have been proposed. These strategies have been formulated within a structured approach able to handle the uncertainty associated with the presence of environmental conditions which could lead to deterioration. The identification and evaluation of risks has enabled the detection of the parameters causing such risks as well as their significance in the deterioration processes. This paper presents the methodology which permits to establish preventive conservation strategies for mitigation environmental risks.
