Restoration and Follow-Up Maintenance Program for University United Methodist Church in Austin,TX

The University United Methodist Church is located at the western edge of the University of Texas at Austin, Texas, USA. Designed by architect Frederick M. Mann, the building has been a landmark to Austinities for more than a hundred years. The Romanesque Revival style complements the early buildings of the university, and greatly influenced the visual character developed for the master plan of the campus. However, years of neglect had taken their toll and a major restoration was necessary. In 2007, the University United Methodist Church engaged Heimsath Architects to evaluate the church and determine what needed to be done to restore the building. It had been 40 years since the last major work had been done on the structure and it had deterioration significantly due to the delayed maintenance. Though the church hoped to work on both the interior and exterior, funds were available only for the exterior restoration. With available funds, the tile roof was re-set over new underlayment, the exterior masonry was repointed and cleaned and the wood trim repointed and repainted, and the stained glass windows were repaired. In order to keep the restored structure in a good shape and to maintain the rest of the building, a comprehensive maintenance program was developed in 2009. This cost-effective maintenance program will prevent the need for future large restoration programs and keep the building in good condition for many years.
