An energy approach to estimate yield strength by small punch testing

Small punch test (SPT) is a miniature sample test technique which can evaluate in-service material properties with an almost non destructive method. In this paper, an elastic deformation energy method based on SPT for the yield stress estimation is presented. This new method consists of the determination of the yield strength by measuring the energy beneath the load-displacement (L-D) curve in the elastic deformation stage. The elastic deformation domain is defined by measuring the elastic reverse displacement during an unloading phase. The Youngs modulus E of SPT (Estp) is obtained by an analytical analysis according to the SPT condition. Good correlation has been determined between the elastic deformation energy and the yield strength.
