Research on limit load and defect tolerance for autofrettaged pipes with corrosion

Ultrahigh pressure pipe reactor is the key equipment of Low Density Polyethylene (LDPE), the maximum operating pressure is 270MPa, any accident leads to serious consequences. In the latest examination, corrosion pits were found at the bottom of pipes, influencing the safe operation. The pipes were treated by autofrettage under 700MPa pressure, residual stress was existed at inner wall, furthermore, the residual stress would redistribute when corroded, the limit load would be different from the pipes without autofrettage. In the present paper, ABAQUS was used to calculate limit loads of pipes with difform defects and pipes with autofrettage or not. Comparing the difference of limit loads, the most conservative situation, pipes with local wall thinning equal in depth without autofrettage, is chosen for defect tolerance research. Defects with different size were simulated to calculate limit loads, and the tolerance was given based on these limit loads.
