Influence of environmental conditions on fatigue behavior of a titanium alloy for turbine blade

An investigation has been carried out to clarify the influence of simulated service environments on the fatigue performance of titanium alloy for turbine blade. An environmental facility was constructed to simulate the low oxygen contented steam system and salt solution system for an axial fatigue testing machine. Fatigue tests were carried out in saturated steam at 100℃ with less than lppm oxygen, and in 3.5% sodium chloride solution at 80℃. Results show that, compared with results for air at room temperature, the fatigue strength is reduced, and the maximum reduction is observed in steam environment at 0.1 stress ratio. The fracture appearance of specimens is discussed to reveal the fatigue failure mechanism in simulated service environments.
