A study on reheat cracking susceptibility of SA543 steel
In this paper, the reheat cracking susceptibility of SA543 steel was studied through Y-groove reheat cracking tests, reheat cracking implant tests and Gleeble tests. It was shown that micro-cracking occurred in Y-groove testing specimen after heat treatment at 595 ℃ for 3.5h. The cracking was found in the coarse grained region of HAZ and propagated along grain boundary, which is the typical characteristic of reheat cracking. Implant tests were conducted for SA543 steel at three temperatures, i.e. 575 ℃, 595 ℃ and 615 ℃. The results showed that the critical fracture stresses are 450MPa, 300MPa and 250MPa, respectively. And the susceptible temperature of SA543 steel was concluded to be 615 ℃. During Gleeble tests, the reduction of area (ROA) of welding specimens was found to be higher than 20%, which indicated that the reheat cracking susceptibility of the SA543 steel was not obvious.
