Quantitative measurement of strain-induced α-martensite in 06Cr19Ni10 austenitic stainless steel

In this paper, 06Cr19Ni10 austenitic stainless steel was cold stretched with different deformation amount at room temperature. Several techniques for measuring the strain-induced α-martensite content in the steel were compared in order to find out the relationship between actual αmartensite contents and Ferritescope measurement results. The different methods involved X-ray diffraction (XRD), Ferritescope device and Metal magnetic memory (MMM) testing instrument. XRD scan was effectively used for identifying and evaluating the martensite, but the analysis was expensive, time consuming and the small specimen must be cut from the material or equipment for the measurement. The readings were get-at-able by the other techniques, but imprecise. The relationship between XRD results and the readings was found to be linear, and the equations could provide technical support for engineer and inspector.
