Development of a Small Industrial Scale Torrefaction System to Improve Heating of Peat as Solid Fuel Equivalent to Coal

Demand for energy increases as the economic and population grow. The demand shoul be fullfilled by the development of conventional and/or new energy sources. Peat, in addition to biomass, is one of the potential energy source in the future. Research on biomass as an energy source has been performed widely. Even utilization of biomass energy has also been done. However, the study of peat as an energy source is still limited. With consideration of the peat reserves in Indonesia amounted to 27 million hectares, the third largest area in the world, it is proper to begin efforts to take advantage of peat as an energy source. The research to improve the quality of peat as a solid fuel with drying method have been conducted. The literature study showed that the calorific value of peat can be further improved by the torrefaction method. Torrefaction is a thermal process applied to organic materials operated at medium temperature, in the absence of oxygen and at relatively long residence times, typically 10 to 60 minutes. The research consists of four parts: research on the influence of main parameters of torrefaction on increasing the heating value, reaction kinetics, development of laboratory scale continuous torrefaction system, and small idustrial scale system design. The small industrial scale torrefaction system design is based on the laboratory scale contiunous torrefaction system which was previously developed and tested. The test showed, that the laboratory scale torrefaction system, especially dealing with material flow handling, have been able to work well. The laboratory torefaction system application on an industrial scale needs some improvements, such as: torrefaction gas utilization, boiler flue gas utilization, and recirculation heating steam condensat. The concluding remarks of the batch torrefaction experiment, the reaction kinetic modeling, and the laboratory scale continuous peat torrefaction system development, were used to develop a basic design of small industrial scale continuous peat torrefaction system. The simulation of the small industrial scale continuous peat torrefaction system showed that with peat raw material 2.5 tons/hour with MC 50%, resulting torrefied peat product of 797 kg /hr. The calorific value of torrified peat is 23.7 MJ/kg.
