Hemi-planar Sky Diffuse Emission Model for Daylighting Calculation via Monte Carlo Method

The performance of Monte Carlo Method implementation for diffuse sky luminance daylighting computation where photons are emitted from a planar surface emulating the sky is very sensitive to the position of the planar surface with respect to the surfaces of a building structure. The aim of this paper is to propose a model of diffuse sky planar surfaces which are tangent to a sky hemisphere enclosing the surfaces of a building structure, hence the name hemi-planar. The sky diffuse luminance distribution is modelled after the CIE/IESNA sky models, i.e., overcast sky, partly-cloudy sky and clear sky. Whereas the diffuse sky photons emission is modelled according to Rayleigh scattering formula. A computer code dedicated for personal computer implementation of daylighting calculation via Monte Carlo method was generated using Fortran programming language. Then, the code was compiled using GNU Fortran compiler, an open source compiler. The code was verified against measurement of daylight illuminance on a work plane of a building scale model. The results show that the proposed sky model suited well with the measurement.
