Experimental Studies on Hydrothermal Process of Municipal Solid Waste to Produce Solid Fuel

The population and economic growth in Indonesia has increased the production of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) in many big cities causing sanitary problems. To solve this problem, the redundant MSW has to be treated, to reduce it volume and use it for the useful means. One of the treatments is using a hydrothermal process, i.e. boiling the MSW in high temperature and pressure, to produce a solid fuel. Then, the fuel is use with coal in a co-firing boiler system. In this study, the hydrothermal process was done using a laboratory scale apparatus with MSW components as the samples. The experiments were done at 215 ℃ temperature and 20 bar pressure. The results of the experiments show that the process time and the water amount which are used in hydrothermal process, affect the proximate and ultimate compositions. The moisture content and the volatile matter decrease and the fixed carbon increase, so that the MSWs calorific value increases. Based on the experiments, it can be concluded that hydrothermal process can be applied to MSW to produce solid fuel.
