THE LATEST DEVELOPMENTS ON SINGLE DROPLET TECHNIQUE TO OBSERVE PARTICLE FORMATION AND TO ENGINEER PARTICLE QUALITY

Spray drying is a common manufacturing technique in food and pharmaceutical industries; advances in drying kinetics studies have improved the product quality and minimized over-processing.Single droplet drying is a conventional method for studying the drying kinetics and droplet morphological changes under conditions analogous to spray drying.Further particle quality engineering, however, requires understandings on both the particle formation mechanisms and the effect of drying conditions on particle properties.Latest development on single droplet technique enables the evaluation of these two aspects by incorporating the dissolution test.By attaching a solvent droplet to the single dried particle, some of the particle functionalities can be examined, including wettability, dissolution rate and material dissociation behaviour. This method can be further extended to combine with post-drying analysis as well as in situ analysis of particle evolution, consequently providing a powerful tool for unveiling mechanisms of some fundamental phenomena during drying.
