PORE NETWORK DRYING MODEL FOR PARTICLE AGGREGATES: ASSESSMENT BY X-RAY MICROTOMOGRAPHY
Drying experiments of random packings made of glass beads have been carried out under quasi-isothermal conditions in an X-ray microtomography device.Evolution of the liquid distribution during drying has been tracked by visualizing all three phases (solid, liquid and gas) at the pore scale.During the data acquisition steps, the drying process was interrupted. From the experimental 3D images, particle center coordinates and radii are extracted by image analysis using binarization and segmentation techniques. These data are subsequently used to generate a network of cylindrical pores for drying simulations.Voronoi tessellation and a node merging algorithm are employed to this purpose.By identifying individual pores of the network with sets of voxels in the experimental image, the present work will help assessing the ability of pore network modeling to describe drying of particle aggregates.
