DRYING STRATEGIES OF NATURAL RUBBER PRODUCING STANDARD THAI RUBBER (STR): EXPERIMENT, MODELLING AND QUALITY ASPECTS FOR SMALL AND MEDIUM ENTERPRISE (SME)
The objectives of this research were to study effect of drying strategies of natural rubber on drying kinetic, quality and specific energy consumption. The experimental set-up for natural rubber was carried out by two-stage drying with inlet air flow rates of 1.8 to 2.7 m/s and rubber bed-depths of 0.1-0.3 m.Initial moisture content of the fresh natural rubber was in the ranges of 36.5-50.6% dry-basis, while the final moisture content after each drying was fixed at 0.5% dry basis. The results showed that drying kinetic exhibited only one falling rate period.Additionally, mathematical empirical drying model describing drying kinetics of a fixed-bed dryer were comparative studied with those results of semi-theoretical drying model. The experimental results showed that the simulation result using the semi-theoretical thin layer drying equation has good agreement with the experimental data.To get the lowest specific energy consumption, the two-stage drying was run under the conditions of 130℃ at the 1st stage drying and 110℃ for the 2nd stage drying correlated to percentage of air recirculation of 90.By this drying strategy, the quality of dried rubber samples was satisfied.
