THE DRYING CHARACTERISTICS OF ULTRASOUND ASSISTED WOOD VACUUM DRYING

Wood vacuum drying is one of the best drying methods, while drying defects appear easily when the drying temperature is high.In this paper, ultrasound was taken as an assistant tool during wood vacuum drying.The drying conditions are the drying temperature of 60℃, the absolute pressures of 0.05MPa and 0.08MPa, the ultrasonic power and frequency of 100W and 28kHz respectively.The results show that the water effective diffusion coefficients for the specimens dried by ultrasound assisted vacuum drying are 4.87×10-8 m2s-1 and 4.62×10-8 m2s-1 respectively and that for the ones dried without ultrasound are 3.68×10-8 m2s-1 and 3.61×10-8m2s-1 separately; the drying rate of ultrasound assisted vacuum drying is much faster than that of drying without ultrasound and the drying rate at the absolute pressure of 0.05MPa is faster than that of 0.08MPa; ultrasound is more beneficial to dry the free water, no drying defects appear during the whole drying process and ultrasound assisted vacuum drying could dry wood at a low temperature with a high drying rate to avoid drying defects during wood vacuum drying.
