SLUDGE BIO-DRYING PROCESS AT LOW AMBIENT TEMPERATURE: EFFECT OF BULKING AGENT PARTICLE SIZE AND SET TEMPERATURE

Sludge bio-drying is an aeration bioprocess aiming at water removal. The mechanism is that sludge is dried by bio-heat generated from aerobic decomposition of organics. From this study, the process could start up in winter (3–9℃) with a 2–3 days lag, while the duration time of it was short as only 7 days. The most effective water removal rate of 31.0% was obtained. As a common bulking agent, straw of mixed particle sizes gave a better run than small (2–5 mm) and large (20–30 mm) one alone.Lower set matrix temperature (43℃) was more effective than higher one (53℃).Small particle size was beneficial to organics degradation, while it was disadvantageous for water loss (28.4%).It was on the contrary for larger straw (25.9%).Higher set temperature can enhance biodegradation remarkably, while it resulted to less aeration accounting for less water removal (29.2%).
