DEM SIMULATIONS OF FLOW OF COAL PARTICLES IN A SCREW CONVEYOR DRYER CONFIGURATION

Screw conveyors are popular for many decades for transport of bulk solids. The system can also be modified for use as a dryer when heat is provided to solids through system jacket and/or screw and some convective medium or vacuum is used to remove the evaporated moisture. This paper describes some of the key results on the numerical analysis conducted using the well-known 3-dimensional discrete element method (DEM) for a U-trough screw conveyor dryer configuration. This work investigates the effect of screw speed and angle of inclination of the horizontal screw conveyor on the residence time distribution for coal particles. For screw speeds of 8, 9, 10, and 15 rpm, RTD, holdup, mean residence time, residence time variance were found to be influenced by the screw speed.Angles of inclination between 0–15° were also found to affect the RTD.Understanding the flow behavior of granular material in a screw conveyor configuration is an important design step for scaling up.The objective is to utilize results obtained from DEM studies for innovative designs of SCD including indirect heating and drying.
