Drying Characteristics of Rough Rice Under Batch Fluidized Bed Drying
Experiments were conducted to estimate the drying kinetics of millet in a batch fluidized bed dryer.Various popular empirical and semi empirical drying models were tested with the experimental data.Although the effective moisture diffusivity and activation energy during various fluidized bed drying conditions were investigated. It was found that increasing the drying air temperature increases the drying rate. The drying rate increased significantly with increase in the drying air temperature and with superficial fluidization velocity of heating medium, while decreased marginally with increase in the solids holdup.Among the various drying models, the Midilli et al.model was proposed as the best model for describing fluidized bed drying characteristics of rough rice. The effective moisture diffusivity was evaluated using Fick’s diffusion equation which was found to vary from 4.6×10-11 to 1.72×10-10 m2s-1 with RMSE less than 0.028.Value of activation energy varied from a minimum of 36.59 to a maximum of 45.14 kJ mol-1.
