INVESTIGATION OF GRAIN AND AIR FLOWS IN A MIXED FLOW DRYER

Mixed-flow dryers are broadly used worldwide for the drying of grain, corn and rice.Even if this dryer are well established on the commercial market of crops drying, there is still a need to optimize energetic efficiency of the dryer apparatus and the product quality of grain.Unfavorable designs of mixed-flow dryers can result in uneven mass and air flow distributions, which causes in locally inhomogeneous residence time and locally different drying conditions, following up with inhomogeneous grain drying.Inhomogeneous drying is one of the main reasons for high energy consumption. The future objective will be to develop a new design of mixed-flow dryers, with improved energetic efficient and more homogeneous drying achievements. The Discrete element Method (DEM) as well as Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations are used to study the effect of design properties and different air duct arrangements.
