HEAT AND MASS TRANSFER IN PULSED IMPINGEMENT DRYING
Impinging jets issuing from the tailpipe of pulse combustors have been evaluated in recent studies for possible application in rapid drying of continuous sheets such as grades of paper and textiles etc.In order to contribute to further basic understanding the effect of pulsations on the local heat and mass transfer rates on the wet target surface being dried, a numerical study was performed on impingement drying with arrays of pulsating impinging jets under large temperature differences when the thermophysical properties can change significantly in the flow domain. The computational fluid dynamic approach was used to examine the effect of pulsation of the jet on the local Nusselt number distribution on the impingement surface.Examination of the velocity field shows that the instantaneous heat transfer rate on the target surface is highly dependent on the hydrodynamic and thermal boundary layer development with time.
