THERMAL AND ECONOMIC ASPECTS OF SUPERHEATED STEAM DRYING. AN INDUSTRIAL VIEWPOINT

This article presents the first results based upon numerous pilot trials using a semi industrial SHS dryer (Super Heated Steam) installed in a complete extrusion line for the production of dry petfood.Due to the fact that Mars production of dry petfood amounted to approx.3,500 kt/y, we had to evaporate approx.900 kt/y of water in order to stabilize this product by a low aW (activity water) value.Mars has a clear ecological responsibility and an economical interest to minimize the consumption of energy and thus the CO2 footprint and - last but not least - the water amount needed for the production of extruded products. The lowest possible use of energy and water as well as a significant reduction of the pollution by odors will be our objective for the future.
