AN INDIRECT TYPE NATURAL CONVECTION SOLAR DRYER WITH BIOMASS BACKUP BURNER FOR DRYING PEPPER BERRIES

This paper presents the design, fabrication and evaluation of an indirect type natural convection solar dryer with biomass backup burner for drying fresh pepper ( Piper nigrum) berries in order to produce black pepper.The drying characteristics of the pepper berries were first determined.The solar dryer design was then computationally modeled, fabricated and experimentally evaluated.The dryer was found to be effective in preserving the quality of the dried pepper berries as the drying process was protected from rain, dust, insects and animals.The drying process was deemed hygiene as the drying chamber was completely covered with limited and filtered air vents in order to capture and retain solar heat.The drying duration was reduced from five to one day when compared with the conventional open space sun drying method.The dried black pepper berries were tested and proven to meet the chemical specifications of American Spice Trade Association.
