Intra-Industry Labor Division and Composition of the Comparative Advantages in International Transport Services: An Empirical Study Based on U.S.-Sino Bilateral Trade Statistics
Evaluation of comparative advantages for transport service industry is popularly based on international balance of payment statistics. However, the indices calculated from the trade sectors holistic data cannot reflect the status quo of intra-industry labor division and composition of the comparative advantages in International transport services properly. Basing on trade breakdown items of Passenger Fares, Freight, and Port Services in years of 1992 to 2008 rather than the industry aggregated statistics, this paper test the relationship empirically between three subsectors in U.S.-Sino bilateral trade in transport services by a simple regression model The conclusion is that USA and China each has different position and comparative advantages in labor division in international transport service industry, and such aspects as economic development, industrialization, factors endowment and trade liberalization should be taken into account in the assessment of the competitiveness in transport industry.
