FRICTION ENHANCED ADHESION IN BIOMIMETIC NANOSTRUCTURES
Recently hierarchical carbon nanotube (CNT) arrays with entangled tips become a promising candidate to fabricate gecko inspired dry adhesives. However detailed deformation and interfacial behaviors of the CNT arrays are not fully investigated, which is of great importance to understand the switching mechanism between strong attachment and easy detachment. Here,a fully atomistic molecular dynamics simulation was implemented to characterize the friction and adhesion behaviors of CNTs peeled from rough substrates. The result shows that friction enhanced adhesion exists in the nano sized fibrillar structures pertaining to the spatula level in gecko.
