The Significance of Language Learning Strategies in SLA

Learning strategies directly or indirectly influence the learners language acquisition. The results of the learners language acquisition can also affect their choice and application of strategies. Though the study of how learners learn a second language, which began in the mid 1970s, does not have a long history, the study of learning strategies has experienced a rapid increase in recent years. Adopting theoretical methodology, the paper reviews and analyses the previous researches of language learning strategies including the definition, classification of learning strategies, and the methods to investigate them, to present the significance of language learning strategies in second language acquisition (SLA). The paper could provide theoretical reference for the future empirical studies of language learning strategies in China, and present pedagogical implications as well.
