Considerations About ESL/EFL Grammar Instruction

The issue of grammar instruction in teaching English as a second/foreign language (ESL/EFL) has been strongly debated. As to this, the paper deals with four questions: what is grammar? why should we teach grammar? what features do ESL/EFL grammars have? how should we teach grammar? The analysis shows that, despite the complexity of the concept of grammar in reality, grammar is necessary for ESL/EFL learners; that, because it is learner-oriented, grammar in instruction is suggested to have some specific features; and that, to deal with the complex process of grammar teaching, some teaching guidelines are suggested for consideration.
