Cultivation of core competence is the key to achieve sustainable development of industry characteristic universities. The paper, to consider coal industry universities as examples, analyzes the competitive advantage of industry characteristic universities in characteristic disciplines, talent cultivation, faculty, etc, points out the way to cultivate core competence should be consolidating the development of characteristic disciplines, fostering creative talents, strengthening the construction of the teaching staff, making development strategy to grasp industry opportunities, cultivating leading culture strength in the industry features.
