Xunzis Theory of Human Nature and His Emptiness, Unity, and Stillness Psychology
Xunzi is the one of greatest early Confucian thinkers. His psychology theory has a very farreaching impact on Chinese Psychology history. Based on the thoughts of Human nature is evil; any good in humans is acquired by conscious exertion. Xunzi proposes that xin, the mind, is the key that transforming nature through setting up conscious activity. In order to keep the mind conditioned, Xunzi singles out three specific qualities of it: emptiness, unity, and stillness. This paper mainly focuses on the relationship between Xunzis theory of human nature and his psychology. The conclusion is that Xunzi can be seen as the first philosopher in Chinese history who has elevated the role of mind to its highest degree. It is now a high time to reexamine his thought, in particular his psychology theory and give it a reasonable position in Chinese history.
