Some Edible and Poisonous Mushrooms of Pakistan

Mushrooms are consumed all over the world as a part of the regular diet. However due to the fear of mushroom poisoning people in developing countries including Pakistan are reluctant to collect and eat wild mushrooms. Edible and poisonous species are sometimes so closely related and morphologically similar that it becomes very difficult to draw a line between the two. Therefore as a result of mushroom poisoning a number of fatalities take place every year. In order to avoid mushroom poisoning, species with distinct identifiable characters may be used for culinary purposes. There are no fixed rules by which one can differentiate between poisonous and edible species. It is possible only when one is quite familiar with the characters of different genera and species. In the present paper a total of twenty four species are reviewed. Out of these nineteen mushroom species are found edible, whereas five species are documented as poisonous mushrooms. Mushroom poisoning and various responses to human beings by the poisonous mushrooms are described. Possible remedies, treatments and precautions have also been documented.
