Susceptibility of Polish Strains of Lecanicillium fungicola to the Different Disinfectants and Their Pathogenicity to Agaricus bisporus

The aim of this study was to investigate the susceptibility of Lecanicillium fungicola var. fungicola strain collection to different groups of disinfectants and the pathogenicity of these strains to white button mushroom Agaricus bisporus. In addition, the efficacy of six groups of disinfectants was validated on commercial mushroom farms. Pathogen isolates were collected from diseased fruit-bodies of A. bisporus obtained from Polish mushroom farms. Effectiveness of three disinfectants for controlling seventeen strains of L. fungicola was examined in vitro. The pathogens were tested for sensitivity to peroxide hydrogen, acetic acid, paracetic acid, and quaternary ammonium compounds ( benzalkonium chloride). Moreover, the pathogenicity of all strains was confirmed and the changes of A. bisporus tissue affected by dry bubble disease were demonstrated by transmitted-light and scanning electron microscopy. The most effective in vitro control of L. fungicola was provided by benzalkonium chloride at a concentration of 500 mg/L, providing mycelial growth inhibition of majority of isolates by over 50%. By employment of transmitted-light and scanning electron microscope analyses, the disintegration of A. bisporus hyphae was visualized. The diseases were not recorded in mushroom crops when good sanitary conditions of mushroom farms was maintained. A significant relationship between mushroom farm sanitary conditions and crop health status was showed.
