Hygiene――Cultivating Mushrooms Without the Use of Chemical Agents
This lecture presents the practical experience gained by Mark den Ouden in the last decade regarding hygiene as a way of preventing pests and diseases. Den Ouden was employed by C point since 1999, and in 2011 he founded his own training and consultancy company for the mushroom industry, Mushroom Office. He has collaborated on many research projects, such as Schoon en middelen vrij ( Clean and Chemical Free) , Telen met Toekomst ( Growing with a future ) , Programmastudie Gewasbescherming Plan 2020 (Programme Crop Protection Plan 2020) with Wageningen University. The projects were funded by the Dutch government and the mushroom industry. Since 1999, the author has co-operated on compiling and giving training courses, and holding examinations for crop protection licences. This licence is required by mushroom growers in the Netherlands if they want to use crop protection agents. This valuable experience combined with international consultancy services in countries such as Iran and South Africa, where hygiene standards are at a different level, has given the author an excellent picture of the options available under all conditions and circumstances. The lecture will address the various types of hygiene measures that can be taken, the investments this entails, the barriers that exist and the other positive effects good hygiene has on the production levels and quality of mushrooms. Each country is typified by its own specific problems, but equally advantages. Practical examples are used to clearly illustrate that the use of chemicals can be reduced. This can often by achieved through training growers and the people who work on their farms. This offers numerous advantages for the grower, including reduced expenses for chemical agents and a lower exposure rate to these products. And for the consumers this, of course, offers the benefit of less chemical agents in the mushrooms they eat, and a lower impact on the environment.
