Mushrooms for Nerve Health-Our Research Findings

Culinary and medicinal mushrooms are renowned for their health benefits on the various systems in the human body that can contribute to wellness and quality of life. As we age, we are prone to a number of life debilitating diseases including nerve related diseases. Further, dementia and Alzheimers diseases are the most devastating. In traditional Chinese and Japanese therapy, Hericium erinaceus has been reported to help stimulate neurite outgrowth which may help reduce or delay on set of dementia. In this study, other culinary and medicinal mushrooms including the edible Pleurotus giganteus and nonedible Lignosus rhinocerus and Ganoderma neojaponicum were investigated for benefits to the nervous system. The extracts of fruiting bodies, sclerotia or mycelium of the selected mushrooms stimulated neurite outgrowth of PC 12 cells. All three mushrooms had varying degrees of stimulatory activities on neurite outgrowth. The activities of L. Rhinocerus, a wild medicinal mushroom were comparable or significantly better at low concentrations when compared to aqueous and ethanol extracts of H. Erinaceus extracts and nerve growth factor (NGF). Aqueous extract of all three mushrooms studied contained bioactive molecules that mimic NGF that is responsible for neurite stimulation activity. The extracts were not toxic to cell lines used in this study. Further, the extracts had genoprotective and anti-inflammatory activities that may contribute to nerve health, too.
