Effect of Casing in Production of the Edible and Medicinal Mushroom Agaricus subrufescens

Agaricus subrufescens ( =A. blazei) is a species prized for its flavor and medicinal properties. Its ability to grow at relatively high temperatures makes it a good candidate for cultivation in tropical and subtropical areas. This study evaluated the effect of the composition of the casing on production yield of a new hybrid of A. subrufescens, using commercial compost prepared for growing A. bisporus in Mexico. Four casing layer compositions were compared. The highest yields were obtained with a casing layer containing sand, peat, and limestone in proportions of 2:1:1 (0. 35 kg per kg compost) , whereas the lowest yield was with a casing layer containing only peat and limestone in a proportion of 1:1. Addition of sand or white volcanic rock had a positive effect on the induction of fructification for this strain of A. subrufescens that has a high potential production.
