Influence of Charcoal Powder Added into Substrate of Lentinula edodes on Fruit Body Yield and Cultivation Condition

We examined the effects of charcoal powder in the growth substrate of Shiitake, Lentinula edodes, on fruit-body yield and cultivation conditions. Basic substrate contained broadleaf wood powder, wheat bran, and water. Charcoal powder was made from Sugi ( Cryptomeria japonica ). Charcoal application method, particle size, and percentage were assessed. The fruit-body yields on substrates containing 3% ,5% ,and 7% charcoal powder with particle sizes of 2.5 - 5.0 mm were significantly greater than that on the control substrate. The internal temperature of substrates with charcoal powder was higher in the first 14 days after inoculation. The CO2 concentrations in all substrates with charcoal powder were lower than that of the control substrate. These results suggest that the mycelia in the substrates with charcoal powder respired more than those in the control substrate. Mixing charcoal powder might increase the temperature of the substrate and shorten the Shiitake incubation period.
