Livelihood Recovery Through JUNCAO Mushroom Industry Development as a Poverty Reduction Approach in Lesotho
Though, mushroom cultivation is in its infancy stage in Lesotho, its recognition as potential industry in improving livelihoods of poor Basotho people has been realized. However, that does not erase the fact that mushrooms do grow wildly in the country. Wild mushrooms have been consumed mostly by herd boys while looking after animals in the veld and some herbal traditional doctors admitted to have long used mushroom in treating some illness in the pass. Due to lack of knowledge in identifying edible species, some people tend to eat poisonous species and die. This probably implanted the notion that all mushrooms are poisonous and ultimately the negative attitude towards mushroom as food. In the recent years, this negative perception has changed due to education and civilization. Besides being high in good quality nutrients people have come to appreciate medicinal roles it plays in boosting immune system. These factors have amazingly increased inclusion of mushrooms in the diet of Basotho. Central Mother Unit (CMU) is a facility established as a JUNCAO (the wild and artificial cultured grasses that are suitable for fungi cultivation) demonstration base to provide high quality spawn to mushroom growers in Lesotho. The current status of Mushroom industry in Lesotho shows that it has the potential of reducing poverty among less privileged (women, physically challenged people and the youth).
