New Models Controlling Non-point Source Pollution on Watershed Scales in Yun-Gui Plateau of China

Agriculture non-point source pollution has attracted many scientists to study but no control techniques are completely effective. This is primarily because there are three defects in the development and application of these techniques: no systematical combination of various control techniques along a water-flowing ecological process;no achievement of identical objectives between farmers and ecologists;nutrient elements no completely cycled and used in agriculture industry. Based oh analysis of these problems, new models on a watershed scale were experimented to form a complete system controlling the non-point source pollution. The new models included three grades of wastewater treatment techniques with lower costs and high suitability to villages along wastewater flows, solid waste treatment techniques with cycling modes, fertilization techniques decreasing amount used in croplands, and contour living hedgerow plantation and management techniques. Test results showed that integral combinations of techniques on a watershed scale significantly reduced non-point source pollutants.
