Modifying Effects of Different Application Amount of Red Mud in heavy Metal Pollution of Tea Garden Soil
Amelioration of acidic Alfisol from tea gardens was investigated with incubation experiments using different amount of red mud. The results indicated that the red mud increased the pH and exchangeable base cations of soil. This caused the decrease in soil exchangeable acidity and toxic heavy metal ions in the soil after the soils incubated with these different amount of red mud for 65 days at the rate of 1, 2,4 and 6 g·kg-1. The amelioration effect of the red mud on soil acidity increased with the increase in the amount of the red mud added. On the other hand the amelioration effect of different amount of red mud on acid Alfisol was significantly lowered the exchangeable Pb, Zn,Cr and Cd content in soil (P<0.05), and the content of exchangeable Pb, Zn,Cr and Cd in the soil decreased with the increase amount of red mud application. It was assumed that the incubation released the base cations in red mud which ultimately increased the base cation saturation of the soil. Our investigation demonstrated that red mud is the preferred choice for controlling the soil acidity and also for reducing the toxicity of heavy metal in acid soils.
