Real-time Monitoring of Benzylpenicillin Sodium Degradation Using Raman Spectroscopy
The discovery and development of beta-lactam antibiotics are among the most significant and successful advances in modern medicine. It has saved countless lives and continues to be a backbone of therapy for bacterial infections. Benzylpenicillin sodium, acted as the major component of this family of beta-lactam antibiotics, has been in constant clinical use. However, benzylpenicillin sodium may be dangerous if it degrades in water over time. In this work, Raman spectroscopy was applied to monitor the real-time variation of the benzylpenicillin sodium solution. Here principal components analysis (PCA), a multivariate analysis technique, was used to obtain a more detailed interpretation of the Raman spectra. This study provided a new idea and method in the research of benzylpenicillin sodium degradation.
