The Protection of the SMEs in High-tech Industries:A Perspective from Net Present Value of New Product Development Project
The continuous innovation is the competitive advantage of the SMEs in high-tech industries. But the innovation are vulneralbe to be imitated by rivals. Thus the intellectual property rights (IPRs) protection of innovation is extremely important for the SMEs. This article examined the Net Present Value (NPV) of New Product Development (NPD) project in house on different contexts. The selection of strategies of IPRs depends on the NPV. The study suggests that four innovation protection strategies can be used for the SMEs in high-tech industries. These include patent strategy, speed to market strategy, secrecy strategy, cost and time strategy. The article concludes that the public sector should offer the SMEs supports on reforming the IP system, including reducing scale patenting fees, insurance arrangements, initiating patent buyouts program and other relavant supports.
