Ontology Based Tractor Fault Diagnosis Expert System(TFDES)

This paper proposed an ontology based tractor fault diagnosis expert system (TFDES).TFDES consists of several components such as user interface, explanation module, OWL reasoner, ontology base and database etc..The software architecture of TFDES was designed based on layers pattern.The SSH (Struts, Spring and Hibernate) frameworks were used in the software, which make the system has better maintainability, robustness and scalability.The diagnosis interface was designed as web interface, which could support users to access TFDES through internet anywhere and anytime.The knowledge maintenance interface was designed as plug-ins based on the software Protege 4 (P4), which could utilize the existing powerful functions of P4.OWL API was used to manipulate the ontology knowledge.The OWL reasoner Pellet was used to make logical reasoning and generate explanations for the process of logical reasoning.MySQL database was used as back-end database to store detailed information about tractor and tractor faults.TFDES could provide tractor fault diagnosis service through internet for the tractor maintenance personnel and the drivers who located in the wide rural areas in China.As TFDES has explanation module to explain how the diagnostic results was obtained, it also could be used as a training tool.
