A Model for Standardization of MANET Simulation Scenarios: The Four Quadrants

Limited number of real applications in Mobile Ad-hoc NETworks (MANET) research coerces a significant role for simulations in evaluating the performance of MANETs based on the characteristics of network under consideration. Simulation is the fundamental tool for majority of MANET researchers. However, scenarios must be suitably created in order to evaluate the true performance of MANET routing protocols; also to accrue accurate and balanced depiction of routing algorithm performance. In order for simulation based studies to be realistic, routing protocol performance parameters should be analysed against various obligatory network and environment aspects. This paper introduces these obligatory multi-dimensional parameters in a Four Quadrant based model; however due to space limitation these parameters have not been quantified in this paper. The proposed model is envisaged to meet the MANET standards for evaluation of routing protocols based on simulations and to provide a ready reference of essential network and environmental factors to researchers for developing realistic simulations by considering each factor of the proposed model.
