Development of Fault Scenario Generator Tool for FlexRay Communication Systems

FlexRay, as a communication protocol for automotive control systems, is developed to fulfill the increasing demand on the electronic control units for implementing systems with higher safety and more comfort. As FlexRay-based drive-by-wire systems become prevalent in the safety-critical automotive applications, the safety issue is going to play an important role for the success of this kind of systems. Fault injection approach is often employed in the safety process to validate the robustness of the systems. In this study, we propose a fault injection platform in compliance with the error modes of message defined in EN50159 for FlexRay communication systems. A fault scenario generator tool that can be used to automatically create a variety of fault scenarios for a specific type of message error is developed to ease the fault injection campaigns and enhance the efficiency of the safety assessment and validation process. Through a case study, the feasibility of the fault injection platform and generator tool is demonstrated. The proposed fault scenario generator tool provides an effective means to investigate the protocol-related fault-tolerant mechanisms specified in the FlexRay communication system.
