The New Plant of the Kroll Process Titanium Sponge
Toho Titanium Co. Ltd has been producing titanium sponge since 1954 in Chigasaki Plant by the Kroll process. In order to respond to the increase in demand for titanium sponge, new plant was designed and installed in Wakamatsu. Kitakyushu City. Production capacity of new plant is 1,000 tons per month. Wakamatsu Plant is basically designed on the technology developed in Chigasaki Plant, however, its goal is superior productivity than Chigasaki. Bigger chlorination furnace, large size reduction and vacuum distillation vessels and enlargement of electrolysis cell for recovery of Mg metal and Chlorine gas are major improvement points in new plant. And arrangement of facilities is optimized in new plant. New plant started its operation for business since April of 2010 with a monthly production volume of 500 tons. Realization of designed capacity. 1,000 tons per month, in the latter half of fiscal year 2011 and productivity and quality are currently being investigated. In the near future. Toho Titanium Co. Ltd. intends to increase its production capacity to 1,300 tons per month in April of 2012 in order to respond to the expanding demand for titanium sponge.
