A Novel Process for Preparing Titanium Powder by Calcium Vapor

A novel calciothermic reduction method of titanium dioxide (TiO2) was presented in this paper. In this, process, calcium chloride (CaCl2) and pigment grade titanium dioxide were mixed and pressed into pieces. The pieces reacted with calcium vapor in a sealed graphite crucible in vacuum furnace. Then titanium powder was obtained from the reduced preform by leaching it with deionized water and acid,and drying it in vacuum oven. The effects of the amount of CaCl2 on microstructure and composition of the reduction products were investigated by means of scanning electronic miscroscopy (SEM),energy dispersion spectrum (EDS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The results indicate that addition of CaCl2 can enlarge the reaction surface between calcium vapor and solid TiO2 and improve the gas-solid phase reaction. The titanium powder (purity detemined by EDS:99. 55 mass%;morphology:irregular;particle size:8-15μm) was obtained on the condition of temperature 1000°C for 6h.
