Solid-state Recycling of Titanium Machining Chips by Severe Plastic Deformation
Machining chips of commercially pure(CP)Ti and Ti6A1-4V were recycled without melting by means of severe plastic deformation(SPD). The asreceived chips were consolidated into fully dense bulk material using equal channel angular pressing(ECAP)at temperatures between 400 and 600℃ for a various number of passes with the application of a back pressure of 50 MPa. The SPD-induced ultrafine grain structure resulted in superior mechanical properties compared to those of Ti solid bars processed under the same conditions. It is demonstrated that SPD consolidation is a promising technology for valueadding recycling of Ti.
